Kogarah Bay

On the northern shore of the Georges River lies Kogarah Bay, located just 16km’s south of the Sydney CBD with a population of 1849 people. It’s one of those pleasant suburbs where the air is fresh and everything you need or want is only moments away.

Kogarah Bay is a suburb named from an aboriginal word meaning “rushes” or “place of reeds”. First spelt as ‘coggera’ or ‘cogerah’ it was later changed to Kogarah when the Railway line was built during the 1880’s.

With just one church and two parks, Kogarah still maintains its reputation as a good and proper suburb filled with a lovely community, scenic views, and a history worth knowing.

During the 1840’s Kogarah and Kogarah Bay truly started to develop when a dam was constructed at Cooks River. Settlers began purchasing small blocks of land to build gardens, orchards and vineyards. Several of these landowners became influential prominent members of the community – Peter Moore, Matthew Carroll, Joseph William George Blake, William Carss and Edmond English.

Soon after the railway was built, businesses had started relocating themselves to be closer to the station in the hopes of gaining more profit. In 1886 Railway Parade grew from having only two houses, to containing a hotel, bank, butcher, 3 real estate agents, post office and a variety of other businesses.

Kogarah Bay may be somewhat smaller than other suburbs but is large in potential. It has one church, two parks, a sailing club and yacht club.

Kogarah Bay still maintains its reputation as a good and proper suburb filled with a lovely community, scenic views, and a history worth knowing.
