What’s in Kogarah?

For those who are mulling over the possibility of purchasing or renting a property in Kogarah but aren’t too sure about the area, let this blog help you decide.  We know we’ve done a blog previously about Kogarah, but we assure you, this is different. This blog provides some knowledge on Kogarah’s features, services, community areas etc.

Starting with the shopping centre in Kogarah, along Regent Street you can tell that Kogarah is a fantastic area to live. There are plenty of shops for all your necessities and wants filled with friendly staff. Starting from the corner of Gladstone Street and Regent Street, the shopping centre continues on for 600metres till the corner of Railway Parade and Gray Street.

Finding your way around in Kogarah with public transport is effortless. With busses continuously running day in and out, through the back streets and along the main road, stopping at all the major and minor stops, there’s almost no need to drive. The Kogarah train tracks run along the New Illawarra and Waterfall train line, which leads to Hurstville or Rockdale, depending which direction you go, which are two major suburbs in the St George area.

Kogarah High School opened in 1876 as a public school featuring a teacher’s residence. The new train station at the time brought much popularity to the area giving students easier access to the school and the school an increased amount of enrolments. In 1892 the school was redesigned to accommodate students doing secondary work. In 1909 the school functioned in three sections, an infants, primary and girl’s intermediate High School.

Kogarah Council hosts an annual music festival and this year’s will be “the 9th Annual Music in the Park” being held on Sunday 18th of March at Oatley Memorial Gardens. It’s a free event always with great success featuring a line up of performers of all sorts of jazz styles. Not only is there entertainment but there’s also a barbeque lunch available, offering soft drinks and coffee. This year’s festival will be even more eventful with Oatley Wines providing a selection of wine.

Beverley Park

Situated between Kogarah, Monterey, Ramsgate and Kogarah Bay, is Beverley Park. Known for its 18 hole golf course, Beverley Park is a beautiful suburb containing many historic single storey bungalows.

Before the first settlers came to Beverley Park, the area was lived in by the Aboriginal members of the Gameygal clan (pronounced Kameygal). In the south of Beverley Park is a wetland haven where wildlife forages and feeds near the mangroves and tidal waters. For many years, before Beverley Park was developed it was prone to flooding and was used for market gardening.

-Just one of the photos we have in the office relating back to Beverley Park-

The land in Beverley Park was first owned by the Crown, (The Queen) and was granted to Matthew Carroll seeing as he was one of the first settlers to take the land in the Kogarah area. Development of the area began during the Great Depression in the 1930’s and funding for the project was granted in 1937. The first auction on the Beverley Park Estate took place on 17 February 1940, when 159 lots were sold. Reclamation, drainage and subdivision of the land was completed by the start of World War II.

In 1887 Kogarah Municipal Council came up with the idea to develop a public park in the Kogarah Bay area. Unfortunately this proposal was rejected by the Colonial Government several times due to lack of funds. In 1905, Local Mayor DJ O’Brien proposed that a shortcut be built between Rocky Point Road at Ramsgate and Kogarah Road (now Princes Highway) as well as having 30 acres of land being reclaimed to create a park.

-Beverley Park Golf Course-

Beverley Park’s Golf Club was built on land that was originally designated for a sporting complex, the reason the Golf Club was built rather than the sporting complex remains unknown. On the 14th of June 1941, the first nine holes opened at Beverley Park Golf Club, organised by a member of Kogarah, William Currey, and the second nine holes were opened two years later. The Beverley Park Golf Club even owns its own cafe/restaurant, called “the 19th” which serves quality food & meal deals.

The National Trust of Australia (New South Wales) nominated part of Beverley Park as a conservation area in 1988. The reason being that Beverley Park is valued as a rare example of 1930’s subdivision composed mostly of Californian bungalows and also for its quality of streetscapes.

Sans Souci In All It's Glory

The words “Sans Souci” in French mean, ‘’without care’’. Although Sans Souci is more commonly known in New South Wales for its beautiful waters and lovely scenery. It’s 25 minutes away from the Sydney CBD and is home to 8574 people.

With Sans Souci being more residentially orientated, its main shopping areas are located on Rocky Point Road, and another located at the intersection of Clareville Avenue and Russell Avenue. For those who like to read, there is a library on Russell Avenue. There are also a selection of retail shops near the library and two public schools within the area.

Sans Souci’s development started in the 1830’s with Catherine Cooper being the first to have received 100 acres of land where she built a home with her husband, Robert Cooper Jr. Later on, Catherine & Robert Cooper operated a distillery in Rocky Point which was then called Charlotte Point.

Regardless of the fact that Sans Souci means ‘without care’ in French, the suburb was actually named from a grand house built on Rocky Point Road, bought in 1853 by Thomas Holt; who later sold it & moved to Marrickville. William Rust who bought the house turned it into a successful hotel, despite its isolation.

There are five soccer fields and play grounds in Sans Souci along with a sailing, motor boat, yacht club & leisure centre.

Ramsgate Beach

Something you probably didn’t know about Ramsgate Beach is that it was named after a seaside resort in England. It’s mostly a residential area with only one main road (Ramsgate Road) for all your shopping needs and the RSL Club is on the same road too.

Ramsgate Road has all the retailing and necessary business places of any town or shopping centre in one road. All along the road is a selection of businesses such as food stores, a Coles supermarket, doctors surgeries, real estate agents, banks, a Franklins store and even several restaurants.

Ramsgate Beach began to grow as a suburb in the late 1800’s when only the wealthy could afford to live so close to the water. However this has changed in the last 50 years as new dwellings have been built especially apartments, bringing up the popularity and population of Ramsgate Beach. According to Realestate.com.au Ramsgate Beach received a 77/100 rating & 4 stars based on street and suburb reviews in Ramsgate Beach, which were written by the locals. The current population for Ramsgate Beach according to the 2006 Census is 1435 people.

In 1812 Patrick Moore was granted 60 acres of land which he later used part of to make Scarborough Park in the 1830’s. The Hon. Thomas Holt named the park after the coastal town of Scarborough, Yorkshire, and the First Fleet convict ship which was briefly anchored in Botany Bay in 1788.

Public transport is available through bus services provided by the Sydney buses company and the Veolia bus company.
